I'm in Yangshou and am making my way towards Tibet. I have no Tibet permit or anything booked. I'm now trying to suss out the most economical option with the most Freedom. I don't want to fly as I prefer to see more on the ground. I figure I'll go to Kunming then Shagrila but I'm totally flexible. There seems to be some question as to wether or not Tibet will be open in May... Who knows?... Anyway, I'm very flexible so if there are other travelers looking to meet up to keep costs down or just…

I'm not an agent - just a very satisfied customer having just returned from 10 days in Tibet. We had a fantastic guide and driver. Wang Du , guide , had 6 years experience, excellent English and really knew how to read what we wanted. The driver , Tseno , was fun , attentive and safe ... we were not one of the casualties scattered on the roads !

The guide didn't ask me to add his details here but i know it'll make some of your trips brilliant - he'll help you plan it and you decide on the…

Hi -

We're a couple and planning to travel from China to Nepal overland and have a few questions. We're in Malaysia right now and don't have a China guidebook yet so apologies if these questions are basic.

1) Do you have to go through Tibet in order to get to Kathmandu? i.e. is there another route?
2) I understand you need to have an official group tour to get from China to Nepal. Is this so? If so, how do these tours work and how much do they cost? Where (i.e. which town/city?) should you…

Hi. I heading off to Tibet around May 22nd to see Lhasa and maybe Mt. Kailash or a trek but not Everest. Looking for fellow backpackers who want to travel the most "independent" in the permit heavy Tibet, have some authentic travel experiences and adventures, and share the cost of a SUV. I have found a "good" tour operator for permits.

I am a Chinese American who has lived around the world and tries to be more of a traveler than a tourist.

Happy Travels and good karma for good responses : )

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Wutse in Gyantse? There is only limited information on the hotel on Lonely Planet and no pictures (except for one I found showing the interior of the room) I found on another website Also, Lonely Planet's contact information is not valid anymore since as the e-mail address and phone numbers listed do not work. I appreciate any help you can give me. (Sure wish I could find a website for the hotel itself).

Thanks!

Hi guys,

I am currently in Kathmandu and I am waiting for news regarding entry to Tibet. My travel agent claims to know more on April 16th. If it works out fine, if not I have some questions and please correct me if I am wrong since I have read a lot of different stuff about the subject.

  1. If the boarder is open, I'd like to do a 7/8 day jeep trip to Lhasa, check out Lhasa and do a short trip to Tibet Everest Base camp. Afterwards I initially planned to continue to Xi An and spend four…

Jokhang Temple is listed in the UNESCO's World Heritage in 2000 which is located in central Lhasa in Tibet. With an area of 25,100 square meters (about six acres), it is the ultimate pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Pilgrims.

The Jokhang Temple was built on the former site of a lake. Legend had it that the lake site was chosen after many failed attempts to build a temple in the region. Prior to this, every time a temple was built, it would collapse. Confused by this phenomenon, being a…

Hello, I would like to join others (to share expenses) in a trip in Tibet, starting Lhasa or Shangrila. Starting ideally 6th June for a maximum of 12 days. My hope is to experience Tibet people, nature, monasteries. Treks ok, and/or comfortable travel, but I would prefer to avoid EBC as I've been there earlier. Please write me to evastern1015@gmail.com .

I'm a 23-year old student travelling alone for the first time to Tibet.. I will travel frm Beijing to Lhasa by train and I'm planning to stay for 3-4 weeks in June: including Lhasa 1 week, and a trip to EBC (Gyantse, Sakya, Rongbuk Monestary); and if costs are not too much making some other tours around Lhasa...

So which all-together costs do I need to expect for 3-4 weeks spending in Tibet with the above mentioned itinerary? Including: Overnight stays in cheap hostels, fees for certain…
