Salutations and thanks in advance for your help. Excuse my ignorance, but can someone please tell me what is the permit required for Tibet and when it is checked? What is the standard protocol for obtaining one? Further, it seems well documented that from Xian you can take a train to Tibet, but does anyone know if you make the trip purely by train from Kumming?

Thanks again!

There's no direct train from Kunming to TIbet, you will probably need to stop over in Chengdu before heading into Lhasa.

And yes, nobody checks.

And there's another thread a month ago as to whether a permit would be checked on the train. The response is mix.

How can I be selling permits from New Zealand, hendri. Now you've totally lost your grip on life.

I'm confused. Is hendri insulting Losang or Westwood? And why is he doing this? And who is he? I don't know Westwood, but Losang has been helpful to me, even though I haven't shown interest in the Tibetan areas (scared of altitude sickness).

Ah, this thread gives more background to the feud going on.
