Hi

I'm thinking about doing a tour of Tibet in January with a friend.
Does anyone konw if you can still see Everest in jan or whether it's just too cloudy?
I know it will be cold but am willing to wrap up warm as this is the only time she can visit China and she is really keen to tour the Tibetan region.

many thanks for any tips!

Sally

Here's some real info and not pointless drivel like the posts above.

January is actually far clearer on average than the main tourist season of June - Sept. Your odds of getting views of Everest are quite high - especially if you plan your itinerary to stay the night at Rongbuk. That way you'll one chance the morning you drive up from Shegar and another the next morning.

Temperatures can be very cold overnight at Rongbuk (-15 / -20) at that time of year and I'd recommend taking a decent sleeping bag with you (can be rented in Lhasa)

A quick google search will give you some weather stats.

As you'll see in some of my other posts - winter is a great time to visit Tibet as long as you're prepared for the cold. I highly recommend it.

Hi Mrcjonesy, sorry can I ask you a silly question - what about May? Is it also very cold at night at Rongbuk? I am afraid of cold night. Is it a good time to view Everest too?

Thank you in advance!

Its always cold at Everest!! If you're worried about cold just rent a big fat down sleeping bag in Lhasa. May is the main climbing season on Everest. It has the best odds of clear and calm weather. But of course there is never any gaurantee of weather conditions in the mountains.

Thanks MrCjonesy. Yes, I understand. That's beyond our control. But do we have to bring a down jacket or just a normal thick polyester jumper if we are going to EBC in May? Thanks again.

Yes - its good to have a down or synthetic puffy jacket at EBC at any time of the year - its cold up there!

It won't be so cold in Lhasa during January, but it will definitely be cold at Everest Base Camp. Don't let that stop you from going though. I have been to EBC many times during January and loved it. The views of the mountain are outstanding during the winter.
