I have booked a Mt. Kailash trip which, if all goes according to plan (HA!), will get me to the Nepal border on the day my visa expires. What happens it I arrive a day or two late? I've heard the fine is 500 Y per day. I will have an itinerary from the travel agent indicating my scheduled arrival.

Cry....sob.....snivel........plead........often they won't fine you for one or two days.....or maybe you can negotiate a lower fee.
Tell then your truck broke down.....the driver was sick....anything really. (buut make it convincing!)
Showing them your itinerary is good evidence that you planned to do the right thing! Also have you guide do the talking. If he is half decent he should be able to talk his way through without any fine.
