Hi

I'll be traveling through china for 54 days in the beginning of next year (2011) and I'm hoping to go to Tibet for around 10 days.

Ideally I would love to travel through Tibet alone and cheaply but after some research it looks as though i'll need to go for a tour and spend a bit of money.

I have been quoted around 8600Y for 1 person (approx$1300AUD), which doesn't seem that bad considering I get a guide, a car, a translator and all permits. That departs from Chengdu and includes the food and accom for the driver/guide but not my own so i'll need to sort out my food and accom separately (is this cheap in Tibet?).

Firstly, has anyone done this trip recently?

1) Can you reccommend a good agency to go through?
2) Did you go from Chengdu or Xining?
3) Does this price seem reasonable?
4) how much in advance should I book. Do I book it from here (Australia) before I go, Beijing (where i'll be about 8 days before I get to Chengdu or Xining) or just rock up to Chengdu and try to find somewhere from there? How long is the processing of permits?

Secondly, is anyone planning a similar trip around this time and wants to join me (cheaper for all of us)?

I've recommended a good agency to many people. I've done a trip to the TAR(Tibetan Autonomous Region) with them.
I'm now planning my trip to Tibet with their helo too.
Their price is about $1400AUD( includes everything for the trip) for three people going together and u can also get discouts for two people sharing one room.

The above 2 are touts to be avoided. Do a quick search here and you'll find a list of recommended agencies.

$1400 AUD seems too expensive for me. I'm not travelling to Tibet only.
But how much discounts?

In Shangri-La in Aug.of 2009, the per person per day cost of a 2-person, 9 day trip flying from Shangri-La to Lhasa, spending 5 days driving around, 2-3 days in Lhasa, and taking the train out from Lhasa to Bejing was USD 167 per person per day or about USD 2600 total for 2 people including all transportation (including into and out of Tibet) and lodging, excluding food.

Try Sam's Guesthouse in Chengdu as well. They arranged a great tour for us earlier this year. They will give you a quote for whatever you want to do, and will also book train or flight tickets. We got the train to Lhasa from Chengdu.

That price sounds reasonable for what you get, but it will be a lot cheaper if you can find one or two other people to go with you.

We booked the tour when we got to Chengdu; it took about 5 days to arrange, including the permit. If you have plenty of time though it doesn't matter; you can go off for a few days while the agency does what it has to do. For example, Emei Shan, Leshan and Bifengxia Panda Base makes a good 4/5 day trip from Chengdu.

Hi, I was in tibet this january. I did not book it a head. A lot of hostel offers trips to tibet and there maybe you find some other traveller to join you, so it will be a littel bit cheaper. I think we (2 person) payed about 600 USD per person for 6 day. We booked in Xi'an. But you have to wait for 5 days for the permision. You have to look if the entrance fee is incl. in your tour. Because they are very expencive.

Food in Tiebt is very cheap like in China. But the guid will bring you to expensive tourist restaurant. If you would just walk around the next corner you would find cheaper and quite often better food.

January is a great time to go to Tibet because all the normad and pilgrans are coming to Lhasa and you see a lot of people from different areas. It was very cold at night, but during the day it is nice and warm. We had also no snow.
In china sometimes when you say you want to go to Tibet in january people will tell you, that this is impossable because of the snow. But this was not true in our case.
Have a nice trip
