Hi

I am planning a trip to Tibet in May.

I want to start in Beijing and take the train to Lhasa. I then want to visit some villages around there, visit monasteries etc, and then go to Mount Kailiash and do a long trek there, before going into Nepal.

I am a British citizen. I understand you have to be part of a group. Can anyone recommend a good tour guide (preferabbly Tibetan)? Also, any idea how much a trip might cost?

Also, anyone looking to be part of a group in May?

Thanks in advance
Alex

Costs depend upon the number of people in the group, where you go, what is included in the package apart from the guide and driver and necessary permits.

For some recommedations regarding companies, please see post #18 in the 2012 Permit Update thread at the top of the Tibet subbranch.

Agree....the cost of this tour is going to depend on how many people travel with you. The cost of the vehicle, driver and guide can be split between 4 (or more) people so without knowing how many people are going with you, it is difficult to estimate how much you should expect to pay. Do keep in mind that the trip to Kailash is one of the longest and most expensive tours Tibet has to offer. Even with a group of 4, you will most likely pay at least $1500 to $1800+ per person for everything (vehicle, driver, guide, train tickets to Lhasa, permits, entrance fees, meals, accommodations, etc).

There are several good and reputable travel agencies that are often recommended on this forum. Two of the more popular are Snow Lion Tours and Tibet Highland Tours, both of which are Tibetan owned and operated.

Ok great, thanks for the tips.

I read somewhere that its not possible to take a Lonely Planet guidebook into Tibet because it has images of the Dalai Lama. What about taking a video camera? Would I be ok to take this?

Oh! By the way.
I am a Chinese who knows how to speak mandarin and read Chinese which may make your trip easiler.
I would like to find several travel partners to share the cost, accomondations and, of course, fun and laughters in the trip :)

Cheers!
