Hi,

I'm a British citizen and I'm hoping to go to Lhasa in Tibet around July time. I have recently booked a plane ticket to Chengdu and from there I had hoped to book a train/plane ticket to Lhasa from a guest house called Cozy Sims. I was assured that this would be an uncomplicated affair and foolishly I booked my plane ticket before I got an email back from them regarding my enquiries. They told me that I need to book a tour and guide to get a Permit and plane ticket. The ticket to Chengdu has cost me a fortune already and I don't want to book a tour all I want is a permit and plane/train ticket to Lhasa.

  1. Does anyone know what the actual situation is?
  2. I saw that I could book a ticket from Chengdu to Lhasa from here in the UK but it cost about £200, should I do this?
  3. If these guys are stringing me along does anyone know of an reputable agency that will just let me book the ticket and get the permit?

I'm doing this thing for charity and will look a real plonker if I can't sort this out so any information would be gratefully recieved.

Many thanks in advance

Cheers

Marcus

I haven't used this site for a while and forgot I put this photo up. I did it as a joke and now regret it so therefore please ignore the photo.

Thanks

You can't get the permit without the guide, driver and itinerary.

I saw that I could book a ticket from Chengdu to Lhasa from here in the UK but it cost about £200, should I do this?

You won't be permitted to board the plane without the permit and you won't get the permit without a guide, driver and tour itinerary arranged.

If these guys are stringing me along does anyone know of an reputable agency that will just let me book the ticket and get the permit?

They aren't stringing you along. The process is as described. You must have a guide, driver and itinerary. Look elsewhere on the TT as the details are described numerous times.

Even changing your itinerary isn't easy.

This is not something that makes sense for charity as it is expensive to go to Tibet.

There is heaps of information already on the TT about this, including the Permit Situation sticky which is two posts above this, and has been updated as recently as today.

What exactly are you doing for charity? Getting people to sponsor you to have a holiday in Tibet?

Hi Marcus

Individual travelers in Tibet was closed since 2008 and since then all the foreign tourist should book their Tibet tour with an local travel agency, they will obtain your Travel permit from the Tibet tourism bureau, but there is no more agency that sells permits only, so you can;t get the permit without booking the tour with agencies.
Full fare of flight tickets from Chengdu to Lhasa is 1640RMB and there won't be much discount in July as it is peak season in Tibet.
So if you want to keep the cost lower then joining a group with other people and sharing the cost is best way, but you should have contact with agency in advance and make sure there is group tour for your interested itinerary.

As far as concerning the current situation, July is little risky, since there are two governmental anniversary will be held in July and that may close or restrict foreign tourist in Tibet, but still under determined.

Hope this is helpful for you.

Hi,

A tad cynical there joolz, but I've heard of people doing this which like you I'm a bit indignant about and thin is a bit off. No I was going to front the cost myself and just use the money raised for the charity. It's unlikely to happen now anyway the situation is just too difficult, I will have to do it somewhere else in the Himalaya.

Cheers

If you still want to cycling and go the legal way, try to find other cyclists who'd be ready to share the cost of a guide. But as others have said, this year is pretty sensitive and Tibet might be closed altogether, so choosing another destination may be safer. Enjoy your trip anyway.

Hi there,

Hope you have sorted out your travel. If not, I would like to share something of my experiences.

It's true that you require a Tibet Permit to enter Tibet. To get the Permit, you need to go through an travel agency and book a travel package. It doesn't matter where you go within Tibet as long as your destinations are open for tourist.

200 pound for an air-ticket from Chengu to Lhasa is reasonable.

  1. Now, you need a Travel Agency to issue you "Tibet Permit". As I mentioned, Travel Agency need to show your travel plan to issue the Permit. So, I suggest you to look tourist destination around Lhasa and outsite Lhasa.

  2. With your travel plan, you can contact travel agencies in Tibet, in China and so on.

  3. I suggest you to find a travel agancy existing in Tibet, it could be cheaper for you. The price of your trip depend on your travel plan.

Hope it may help you a little.
