Dear tree-climbers, I need to find out for a friend who will be travelling from Australia to China (to Beijing then Shanghai on a busy conference schedule), how they can get from SHanghai to Lhasa? Are ideas of travel agents in Australia who can help her out to organise trvael permit, or reputable agent in Shanghai she can contact beforehand? (She wont have time ater finishing work in Shanghai to wait around as on limited time frame). Any ideas or experiences or travel agent recomendations will be warmly received! Many thanks

Cheapest way will be to find a Tibetan agent in Lhasa that can organise all your travel plans and have your Tibet permit couriered to your hotel in Shanghai. (use the search function or cruise back through previous posts on the TT)
If you want total reliability and peace of mind then you will pay more. You could try Thor Travel in Adelaide. They have a reliable Tibet agent and can organise all your plans well in advance.
However......bear in mind that unless his/her dates line up with a group or other travellers they will be travelling on their own and this gets pretty pricey.

Haven't heard of anyone or any company doing this for a reasonable price. A group of friends went on a Chinese-speaking tour 20/6-2/7 for 6400 RMB round-trip train, leaving from Shanghai and going as far as EBC. It was an excellent trip, but since it's a full tour and Chinese-speaking I imagine it would be of no use to most of the travellers here.
Cheers!
