Ok, I from what I hear, when your travelling by train the permit for Tibet is a bit either way, but does anyone know about flying into Tibet and how serious they are about checking? Please and thankyou.

We are not long back from Tibet. Yes, the permit thing is alive and well. Indeed, when we checked into the flight to Xian en route to Lhasa, we had to convince the airline (China Eastern and quite OK) that we would have the Tibet permit delivered in Xian. Our guide in Xian, in checking us into the Lhasa flight had to show the permit. Also our Lhasa-based guide had to show it on a number of times. Of course, another permit was needed to head to Everest Base Camp (yuck!) and the Tibet entry permit was again scrutinised too. Also, we had to personally present our passports at the entry point to Everest region. And exiting too. As for the train, our guide said he meets groups off it, and they are invariably tired. Drivers are frequently checked, incidentally.

We are widely travelled and Tibet is a high point (no pun intended) of our travelling lives. 12 days - long and tiring. But wonderful!!!

THEY ARE SERIOUS!! You will not get on the plane without a permit. They are currently checking at all mainland Chinese Airports.
