Hi

I am planning a trip to Western Tibet tentatively from 4th October - end October.

Starting with Lhasa and then onto Kailash, Guge and Mansarovar.

The regular route seems to be the southern route but I have read that it closes sometime in mid October. What about the Northern route? Which of the routes is more scenic? On which of the two routes is it possible to come across nomads?

Second, Air China now flies to Ngari from Lhasa - but I was told it is not available to foreigners. Any way to confirm this?

My agenda is to do a slow kora and drive through without any hurry.

Thanks
ws

It was a number of years ago that I wandered out west in Tibet, but remember enjoying the southern route more - possibly because we were walking. Hitched the northern route on trucks (in the days of individual travel).

Many nomads walking back along the south after Kora around Kailash - this was in September though. The Himalayas also very beautiful to gaze on day after day. Some very beautiful lush green valleys where nomads camped feeding their animals.

Go one way and come back the other!
