Hi,

Are there any decent or semi-decent shops in Lhasa that sell mountain bikes? If so what quality/price can I expect? I'm planning on doing some bike touring around there but I don't want to lug my own bike. If I can buy one, do the stores also sell rear and front racks? I will travel with my own panniers and other gear so I don't need anything else other than a bike.

Thanks.

Taraboshi.

Plenty of bike shops in Lhasa these days.....but only a few that sell decent bikes. You should be able to find a Giant ATX 770 or similar for around 3000rmb (US$395) Or you can ask a Chinese cycle tourist on the street if they are selling their bike and flying home. (This is super common right now) I bought a nice mountainbike off the street with full shimano components and shocks on the front for 800rmb. I have done hundreds of kms on that bike! You will find back racks but most bikes these days have shocks and no front rack. I would recommend bring a good handlebar bag instead.

You may want to bring your own set of tools as good tools can be hard to find here.
