I have limited time in Tibet and would like to primarily spend it in and around Lhasa. But I would also like to get to the Mt. Everst Base Camp.

So far the only information I can find has this as part of a larger 5+ day tour.

Does anyone know if you can hire a jeep or take a bus that takes you directly from Lhasa to BC?

Limited time .. and directly to EBC - that sounds worrying. How much time have you set aside for acclimatisation in Lhasa , and how much on the road to EBC ?

The only way you may be able to do that would be to hire a 4WD through one of the travel agencies in Lhasa. Some will let you make your own itinerary, so you might be able to arrange for one of them to drive you straight there and back. It is not going to be a day trip, and would probably take about 3 days. You may also wind up paying for the entire trip yourself, which I imagine will be at least 4,000Y. It may be difficult to find other travelers willing to make the same trip, especially if you are trying to make the arrangements in a hurry. Most opt for the 5 - 7 day tours that make all the stops between Lhasa and the EBC.

There is no public transportation that will allow you to do this. Even if there were, the rules concerning travel outside of the Lhasa region are being strictly enforced these days. You need to arrange a tour through one of the agencies, and have all of the necessary permits, to go to EBC.

I would worry less about the time and worry more about acclimatizing. I say don't risk it. I saw a lot of people come down with symptoms of altitude sickness while I was there.

We did EBC and return in 5 days and that was with nearly full days driving. We all coped well apart from some degree of shortness of breath and the cold at Base Camp.

About the fastest you could do this trip would be in four days, though five to seven is the standard. As #1 has said, you have to take into account the elevation gains.

Laker,

I'm planning a trip to Tibet this mid-August and I would like to rent a 4-WD for 6-7 days with driver and perhaps guide. Which agency did you mention would rent the car for around Rmb 4000?

Thanks...
