Hey all,

Thinking about attempting to bus/4wd it from Lhasa to Chengdu in December-January.

Does anyone have any advice on a) whether this can actually be done? b) how this can actually be done? c) what permits etc I will need to sort out?

PS I have already done Tibet in winter before so I (think I) know what to expect on the weather front :P

Thanks in advance!

if you take a bus from chengdu to Tibet,it takes lots of time.in common, most of people will choose to take a flight .in order to manege the permit, you will prepare your visa, passport and other info .about your travel, where would you want to go?and i can provide some info to you.

Hi, the permits for overland tour between lhasa and chengdu has been suspended since this March, no one knows when will resume, better not plan this tour until situiation clears

yup - #2 is correct. No foreigner has traveled this route this summer due to the permits being suspended. (you can't get the permit for Chamdo - so makes no difference if you attempt to come in through Sichuan or Yunnan routes) officially it is because of "roadworks" but its much more likely due to some "issues" in Chamdo.

There is no indication when or if this route will reopen soon. I'd be planning an alternative route for this coming winter.

re: travelin this route in Winter. Its not impossible - many of the passes do get snowed in occassionaly - buses don't get over the passes after snow - so you'd definitely want to be in good quality landcruisers with a good safe drivers.

Ok thanks all, I hadn't heard about the permit situation.

Will just have to find somewhere else in China to do an ill advised, borderline life-threatening epic journey....shouldn't be too hard :P
