Hi there,

Anyone knows if the bus service from Katmandu to Lhasa with state-run Sahja Yatayat is currently open to foreigners?

I have heard rumors that this bus may start again, but I don't think it is operating now. This service will not be available to foreigners and most likely never will be.

Even if the bus does start operating, it is unlikely that foreigners will be permitted to take it. Currently foreigners aren't permitted to take the bus from the airport to Lhasa.

the tourism bureaus from Tibet and Nepal just met and the bus was on the agenda again. But when ever it was actually operating foreigners were never allowed on it. I see no hint of political change to indicate that it will be any different if it opens again next year.

the train will be happening long before anyone is able to catch the public bus, just a few extra tunnels through the mountains and straight into Kathmandu

lb - we'll be able to teleport before the politics in Tibet is settled and the conveniences of modern travel and ease of euro-style border crossing are available in this part of the world!?
