Had a message from someone called Merien, but each time I tried to reply it would not post.

So a little info on my trip from Kathmandu to Tibet.

I used Tashi Delek Nepal Expeditions, email: tashidele@mail.com.np they are in Thamel.

I did a 8 Day 7 Night trip from Kathmandu to Lhasa, the price was $320 including all entrance fees, accommodation, 2 nights dorm style, rest twin room with en suite. breakfast, transport.

Not included, lunch and dinner, tips flights or train for onward travel from Lhasa.

My permit cost $114, I think it depends on what you are doing afterwards if you go back to Kathmandu I think it is cheaper, I continued into China and have a 28 day visa.

Onward travel, depends on where you are going, flight back to Kathmandu $380. Train to Chengdu for me was $180, the agents bascially charge a $100 commission, as they have to get there agent to book in Lhasa.

there are 100's of agencies in Kathmandu, pretty much charging around the same, some are charging more, but they have departers every Tuesday and Saturday, it doesn't matter who you book through you pretty much all end up on the same bus when you get to the border, we ended up being a group of 34 on a big bus, Saturday departure, we meet the tuesday departure group was much smaller prob about 20.

Unfortunately we had a really bad guide, his english was terrible and he was always late, walked really fast and would start talking before everyone was there, not that we could understand him. I don't think all the guides are bad, as we meet a coupld of other guides who had great english and were really informative and professional.

Hope this helps and it goes through as my 2nd attempt.

Cheers Tina

Tashi Delek Treks and Expeditions are a good reputable agency. If traveling with a large group of 30+ is not for you, they offer smaller group travel as well. A group of 4 costs around $625/ per person for the above stated tour (not including airfare.train fare departing Lhasa).

Hi tina, thanks for the reply. I just discovered it while brosing the forum :)

Great info, I visited the Tashi Delek agency but was not really impressed by their reception. I know they all end up in the same bus, but still I was a bit more charmed by the guys at Mission Eco Trek across the road. Same deal, but 340 US. Permit is only 58 US if you book one week in advance, incl. 30 day visa. I'll be taking off on the 27th.
I have one more question, I also booked a train ticket to Chengdu, but was wondering it is worth spending an extra day in Lhasa. It seems nice to have a day without a guide dragging me along. But I've heard hotels are expensive (are they?) and that the tour covers basically all there is to see in Lhasa... If you have any thoughts, please let me know.

Thanks
Merien

With regards to extra day in Lhasa, you will probably have that anyway as the train to Chengdu only leaves every second day. So I was going to leave on the Saturday from Lhasa, but no train, so had to go on the Sunday, hotels not expensive, and there is bound to be someone else from the tour you will be able to share a room with. Also you do have quite a bit of free time, guide only takes you to the sights and through them then you have free time.
Enjoy
