I intend to cross over from Kyrgyzstan into China (Kasghar) and want to travel to Kailash/Mansarovar before making my way to Lhasa. Some of the previous threads indicate that this route is completely closed for outsiders now. Can anyone confirm whether that is the case or not. If outsiders are forbidden then what would an alternate route be?

Regards

I'm afraid what you said it's true. The entry to Kailash is only from China(Lhasa) and Nepal.
Any route you choose, you have to get a permit frist.
May it can help.

if you are planning to be in kashgar anyway it won't hurt to check with travel agents while your there. rules and regulations regarding tibet are in constant flux.

an alternate roue would be kashgar-urumqi-dunhuang-golmud-lhasa-kailash

All recent reports are that you cannot enter Tibet overland from any direction except Nepal. Obviously there is nothing to prevent you from asking but I would not set my heart on it.

Even when it is possible, it is outrageously expensive since you must have a guide and driver for the entire trip. As a solo traveler, this means paying the expenses for the car and for the two other people yourself for travel there and home again for them.
