Hi
I am travelling to Tibet next April and would like to know internet conditions. I remember that China had a problem with Google and don't know how is the situation now. I will be able to access Gmail?

I will be for some days in Lhasa and then going to EBC and Nepal.

Does someone know how are things now?

Hi
Yes, you are right that Google.com has some problem in China but you can open your gmail via Google.com.hk (Hongkong) mostly no problem as i am using gmail too.
Things seems getting better and short notice released from the Tibet tourism bureau said Permit will issue beginning of April and will reopen for foreign tourist but no one can guarantee 100% till Mar 28th which is known as anniversary of people's liberation day.
some hotel in Lhasa has internet connection but there is a limited facilities outside of Lhasa, but you can easily find internet cafe and cyber in LHasa, Shigatse, Lhatse.
Cheers

Hi! No problem if you are using IMAP or POP3 on your device. Internet is slow. I recommend you to buy a SIM card in China before entering Tibet. I bought one prepaid China Mobile SIM card with one month internet connection plan. I don't remember how much, but it was not much. You won't have 3G. I tryied a China Unicom SIM card with 3G in mainland China, but don't know if you will have signal in Tibet. My tibetan guide told me that China Mobile is the best there... but I just had GRPS signal.

While the internet will probably be considerably slow, you should be able to access Gmail. I have lived in various regions of the Tibetan Plateau over the past 10 years and can normally access Gmail without any problems.

There are many internet cafes across Lhasa as well as places in Gyantse, Shigatse as well as most other sizable Tibetan towns.

Thanks for all info.

It's good to know I can count on some internet at least. The SIM card won't work because I am coming from Nepal not China.

But I don't need that much. But if I need.. it's there. That's OK.

I might add my experience --
My practice is to send an e-mail home every day.
I had no problem in doing this is Lhasa, but it was a problem in other areas. However, this was mainly because my guide was unaware of where to find them. Even in Shigatse she did not know the places. However, I asked the hotel manager where to find a computer and she gave me some general directions. I walked many blocks and had to do some good searching to find the internet cafe.

Anyway, get a guide that knows where all the technology is.
