I am completely lost to what is happening with the permit situation...

I have read most of the postings over the last 3 weeks but now i am not sure what's the deal now..so how people are going to tibet nowadays???

I understand you can't get an "individual permit" right/wrong?
you need to book an organised tour to get to tibet right/wrong??

do you think it will be easier to get a permit in xian or chengdu?? i have been told that some hostels in xian can help with the permit...what do you think better start asking in xian or make my way to chengdu as it's the gateway place??

I am really really against the idea of having a package tour i.e 5 days/4 nights...i just want to go to lhasa and shigatse with a day trip in between...nice and easy

so what should i do??? i am leaving for beijing on sunday then planning to travel to xian then to chengdu if needed

thanks for any inputs

But it seems like some people got one through Sim's for Y500, Sim, can you confirm it?

Not really if you are going into Tibet by train, you got the permit. Another thread mentions that nobody checks the permit.

Probably Chengdu.
Again, ask Sim's.

I wouldnt trust the poster who says you can get to Lhasa without the permit. His credentials are in doubt.

if you only want to go to Lhasa and Shigatse I don't understand why you are so 'against packaged tours'? Just opt out of a guide and book permit+transportation, hotel and (adviseable) Potala Palace ticket, and you'll save looking for accomm and queing for the ticket yourself.

thanksss

it's not i am against packaged tours..it's the guide things that bother me...you suggested the opt out of a guide..didn't know you could do that??...i am actually happy to pay for permit/transportation etc but want to be tied up to a group things...i just happy wandering around the place by myself.

I guess I will start asking for the permit in Xian and if this fails will make my way to chengdu

We booked a flight, permit and a hotel in Lhasa for July no problems, with Helen at Windhorse in Chengdu. Several people on here have successfully booked with her.
