Hey there,

As for as I know is February very cold in Tibet, and from 25 February untill 5 April closed for foreigners. I would like to see the celebrations of Losar, but I'm having trouble with finding out which tour operators are available for the lowest price. Especially in February, because then only tours are available on request. Please let me know what you found out, also about prices of tours (included and excluded). I'm up for going because of the special celebrations though :). But I won't be surprised if you need at least 4 people for a tour to make it less expensive (else it's very expensive)
My e-mail is: mriesje_land@hotmail.com (works better then checking the forum)

Cheers!

Tibetan Losar is based on the Tibetan calender so "changes" every year based on the alignment with the Gregorian calender. So in 2011 Losar is likely to begin on Saturday 5th of March.

March 10th is the anniversary of the Tibetan uprising and so it is VERY likely that foreigners will not be allowed into Tibet between end of Feb and end of March 2011.

So unfortunately visiting the Tibet Autonomous Region for Losar in 2011 may very well turn out to be impossible. Personally I think Losar is fun if you have Tibetan friends but generally it is a family affair and the "festivities" are mostly within family homes (especially with the political climate the way it is now in TAR you are not going to see any public festivities around 5th of March 2011).

However - traveling to Tibet in winter is fantastic and I highly recommend it. Any time from December - Feb you'll find the Barkor and the Tibetan area of Lhasa packed with pilgrims and various monasteries have various festivals on dates that are often difficult to predict (even for Tibetans!) but fun if you happen upon them!

Weather in Dec - Feb is cold but it is totally managable with a good warm jacket. Hotels with decent heating are far more common now and often a bit cheaper in winter.

Tour prices in winter are often significantly cheaper than summer time so it is much more realistic to travel "cheaply" in small groups in winter.

Have fun.....

:)

Even if you find partners, it is extremely unlikely that you will get a permit to visit Tibet for Losar this year. Forget your plans for this year and try another year when Losar doesn't fall in March.

hi
thank u guys infor.
i dont go there in march. i suppose to go tibet in early february. up to now av consulted some agencies and they all say its no problem to get permit that time. after comparing them generally, i choose one of them, actually this agency is the one that i booked my first time travel. and i think they have given me more discounts than any other. after all, if they cant get me permit, they will return all the money, the only problem lies in that i cannt get more discounts unless i find partners, so.....
and macjonesy is quite right that the price of going to tibet in winter is quite lower than that when i went there last autumn. and coldnes to me is no problem, cuz in my own country we seldom have snow in winter, or rhather to no winter at all. so im quite glad to enjoy a winter with snow, hawhaw...

I am planning to Tibet too. I planned to be there late April and early May. I wonder if it is possible (due to Losar)? If it is not, I must change my plan: go early Feb, so I can join you. Pls inform me about your itiniery. Thank you.
