Hello to all,

sorry, if my english is not that good. My husband and I plan to travel to China in October 2010. We also want to make a trip to Lhasa, Tibet, date of depart from Lhasa by plane is 30.10.2010. A travel agency in China offered us to arrange this trip. Our plan is, go to Lhasa by train (from Xian), go out from Lhasa to Chengdu by plane. Travel agency told us, that the flight price from Lhasa to Chengdu is 1500 Yuan p.p. We checked it by elong or other sides. Of course, when we now book a flight for this time of October, we have to pay the normal price. But we wonder, whether to book last minute, to get the flight cheaper. What about last minute booking? For example, we want to book our flight 10 days before, or 5,... 2 days before? Is discount available normally? I read in this forum, that on other flight routes it is no problem to have discount, but I never heard it about the flight route Lhasa-Chengdu. Have anyone a tip for us? Or experience about this flight route and discount? Looking forward for your answers. :-)

Best regards

Hello Toffi,
We just came back from Tibet, we also wanted a discount for a flight between Lhasa and Beijing,(we booked 5 days before the flight) But there were only expensive flights the day we wanted to fly back. It was even more expensive then a month before. So I think you can get a discount if you have time then you can pick a day which is cheaper. But don't expect it to be very cheap. Maybe it is different in October but in the summer there were hardly discounts. Yes maybe a discount of 130 Yuan but thats quit a risk for not a lot of money.
Good luck and have a great time.
All the best Frank_r

It is not typically difficult to arrange flights out of Lhasa (to Chengdu), as there are so, so many flights each day. Plus, since the government regulates the standard airfare, you won't end up paying more than 1500 yuan (plus tax). As such, I think it's pretty safe to hold off on booking your return flight to Chengdu until (a) there are discounted airfares available, or (b) you've already arrived in Lhasa. (Flights are easy to book in person at the CAAC office in Lhasa.)

Having said that, I can imagine that your travel agency might be unhappy with you not arranging your return flight until the very last moment. After all, they are responsible for you while you're in the TAR, and also responsible for your exiting the TAR. In addition, even if discounts do appear, you may find it difficult to book them (through elong or ctrip) online, since the flight departs from Lhasa.

It may be the case that the Chengdu-Lhasa flights are not discounted as often or as much as other domestic flight destinations in China. They do, however, sometimes go on sale. In 2009 I bought tickets from Chengdu to Lhasa for 900 yuan, which was a 40% discount.

you won't get them any cheaper , holding off and if you wait until lhasa , eventhough you probably will be able to book a ticket out it will play on your mind most likely until you get it, so probably it is not worth the extra thinking space it will occupy. In winter there are discounts but difficult for a tourist to get them, the agencies do get discounts and that is how they make some of their profit , but not much.

You might check with the company that is arranging your Tibet Travel Bureau permit as they might be able to get a discount.

There are very limited airlines and flights to Lhasa and thus I would never expect to find the prices discounted online. Get them while you can. If you wait, there may be no tickets on the day you want to travel.

Better safe than sorry.

We booked one day then flew the next from Lhasa to Chengdu and paid a bit over 1400Y with Sichuan Airlines. Think all airlines were round the same price. Was in April, though.

Last june the price was 1500 yuan one way Chengdu Lhasa if you booked with ctrip.com or elong.com. Om the way back to Chengdu there was a delay om the departure time of all the flights and I wanted to change to earlier departure even if I had to pay extra but all flights were full. Let your agency take care of the flights now. It means peace of mind for you and no worries. I had tried to buy a ticket directly from Lhasa to Beijing but it was all sold out 2 days before I left. Had to go first to Chengdu and depart from there

pls bear in mind that 1st Oct to 8th Oct is China national holiday and it is really hot season. Try to keep off during this period as all the beauty spot are full of ppl.

There is not much discount on the route btw lhasa and chengdu. You may still wait and check the price occasionally, but confirm the ticket before set out. It is difficult to buy train ticket in lhasa as it is always full loaded.
