#6+#7 I have spoken to a travel agents and they are telling me that I can get my own individual "group" visa on the tour from Katmandu so that I may exit out to the mainland by myself. At least one thorn tree post seems to verify this. If it is incorrect, please tell me, someone.
Thanks,
Hal

I have just spent 10 days in Lhasa and the immediate area and saw a lot of the "sino-sisation" in the city but once out at monastries like Ganden & Samye we saw very few Chinese tourists. The Tibetans were very friendly although I got into a bit of trouble accidentally speaking Putonghua ;-( they don't like it.

#11 I didn't get that impression when I spoke to monks at Drigung in Chinese. I think they liked actually having someone from outside to talk to. Is it possible that what you though was dislike was perhaps simply not understnding Chinese so well?

When I arrived at Drepung the monk at the gate was practising his characters.
