You can't buy suitable bikes for that trip in Lhasa, bring your own or buy one in Chengdu, etc. The main hangout for cyclists in Lhasa is the Spinn Cafe.

Use the search function here to search through the 'On Your Bike' branch, there are numerous detailed threads on this topic.

Most bikes in Lhasa are probably too small for tall westerners, but a Korean I met here in Lhasa bought a small frame (Giant ATX 740) for 1600 yuan, at a bicycle shop in front of the Dongcuo Youth Hostel. The front derailleur is written as "Deore" but it was fake, the rear derailleur is Acera. The front shock is a cheap quality Giant one. He couldn't find any place to buy pannier (not even at our place). You can't find good portable pump and other compact repair kit in Lhasa. Better buy the kit before you come.

And except this Korean guy (I guess he couldn't finish the route by bicycle only because he has only one week on his visa!), racpat (Dutch + American, search this TT) done this trip about a month ago successfully.

Petter & Andreas (nick: pttrkllnbrg) and Shatin are also cycling to Kathmandu, without any permit. Better wait for their latest reports.
