I would like some information about a trip I am going to make. I want to go from China (Chengdu) to Tibet (Lhasa) by plane, overland to Nepal (KTM) en by plane back to China. I have a few questions.
1. How do I get a permit and flight from Chengdu to Lhasa?
2. How do I get a overlandtrip from Lhasa to KTM?
3. I have heard that when you go back from Nepal to China, they take out the Chinese visa of your passport. Can somebody tell me if it is true?
Tnx al lot

Please read this link first. Also please do a search on this forum with the appropriate keywords. Your questions are FAQs.
1) Contact Sim's Cozy Guesthouse in Chengdu.
3) Your phrasing is wrong. Any unused Chinese visa in your passport will be cancelled and you'll be put on a group visa when you enter China from Nepal.
Cheers!
It's easy to go from Lhasa to Kathmandu, if you want to go straight, there's a bus service for Y720, no extra permit is required but you can only travel from Lhasa to Kathmandu straight.
You can also rent a jeep which is quite a popular options for travellers going from Lhasa to Nepal. Going through Gyantse, Shigatse, EBC, Zhangmu (Tibetan-Nepali border).
The visa cancelation only applies if you go from Nepal into Tibet. If you fly from Nepal to anywhere outside of Tibet (ie. Chengdu, Beijing, etc) your visa will not be cancelled.
If you enter from Nepal into Tibet (going overland or flying), you will have to enter on a group Chinese visa. Any Chinese visa that you have in your passport will be cancelled.

Its easy to arrange permits and flights from Chengdu. About every guesthouse has a travelagency that can arrange that. Sims are quite good. You will not be able to book the flighjt to Lhasa on your own. The agencies take care of that and the permit. If you want to take the train its often possible without a permit.

pazu are you sure about the bus? I understood that a bus service from Lhasa to Ktm (or the other way) started a couple of years ago but has now folded. Would be grateful if you or others have made this journey by bus recently.
Thanks
Hi Otis_b_flywheel,
We wanted to go from Lhasa to Kathmandu in mid August (but we didn't go at last), we searched around some tour agencies for some information (my friend is Thai so he needs to be travelling as a foreigner), we were told by the staff working in the travel agency inside Kailash Hotel that there was a bus to Kathmandu for Y720, no permit required.
Ask them for more information.
The Kailash Hotel is on the Beijing Dong Lu (Dekyi Shar Lam), just about 300 minutes west of the Mentsikhang Lam (Tibetan Hospital Road).
