I've heard reports of people being able to get a bus ticket from Lhasa to Kathmandu by just paying the bus driver in cash. If this fails, I'll try my luck hitching the way. Are there any personal experiences to be shared? Where would I be checked for permits, if I was on a bus? And lastly, does anyone want to join (starting maybe on the 31st)?

Well, guess I'll reply to my own topic.

Took a bus at seven from beijing zhonglu to shegatse. That was easy, 50y.
In shegatse we spent five minutes after arrival on the bus station and saw a bus leaving for tingri, so we jumped it, cost 100y. Before lhatse there was a police check point where the police didn't agree on us being on the bus and apparently fined the drivers 100y for each of us. Consequently the drivers decided to kick us of in Lhatse.
From Lhatse we took a tractor to the next check point (5km) and walked around it, although we could just have walked thorugh it too.
After the check point we caught a private car over to Shegar for 50y (there are two of us, so it was 25/person). We spent the night in Shegar.
From shegar we again caught a tractor to the military check point (6km). We triedf to walk around it but the soldiers waved at us and we went through it, which turned out to be purely protocol and we could continue.
After the shegatse check point we got into a truck for 20y each until Tingri. And from Tingri we caught an unofficial bus to Nyalam, which started at around 2.45 and was in Nyalam at 01.30 at night.
And now we are in Nyalam, trying to catch a lift to the border. Buses don't operate from here, because the road is that horrible, and most traffic is only allowed at night because of construction during the day. So we'll see. There is one more checkpoint ahead, just before Zhenmu. Thus we'll try to catch a land cruiser, although land cruisers don't seem to be very willing to take hitchers.
