I am taking the Trans-Mongolian train to Beijing, arriving 23 September, and then travelling on to Nepal via Lhasa. I have been told that the Beijing - Lhasa train is likely to be very busy at this time and that it may be hard to get a ticket. I am travelling from Britain and I get the impression it's not worth trying to book onto this train from home.
Any comments please?
Thanks

Do a search on this forum with the relevant keywords. It's not easy to get a ticket to Lhasa, and you'll most probably have to book a tour as well.
Cheers!

I would recommend having a travel agency in Beijing arrange a ticket for you to go to Lhasa before you arrive. Places like Leo Hostel can arrange your permit and train ticket to Lhasa before you arrive in China.

We are in Beijing and we have found tickets immediately. We arrived on de 31st morning and in the afternoon we found an agency next to Leo Hostel (don't know if it's the same) where we could get the tickets (hard sleeper) and the permit (just for Lhasa) for 170 euros.

Then we want to go to Nepal but it seems to be easy to arrange this tour and the permits for the rest of Tibet from Lhasa.

Good luck!

I've already been in touch with Leo's Hostel and they seem very helpful. Sorry ellyse if I've been jamming up the forum with a FAQ!
