Anyone know if acetazolamide (treatment for altitude sickness) is available in China. I went to about 10 pharmacies in Beijing with no luck. I'm heading to Xian tonight and am hoping for more luck there.

Is there another name I should be using. I even got it writtten down in chinese to no avail

Probably too late, but....your best chance is in Beijing. In 2003, I got some at Beijing Family United Hospital. It's a foreigner-oriented clinic on the way to the airport (near Lido Hotel), so maybe you could stop there en route. I think the Chinese name is Hemu Jia Yiyuan. As I recall, I just called ahead and dropped in to pick it up. One of the doctors on staff was a climber so he gave me some advice on altitude sickness and wrote the prescription on the spot. By the way, the brand name is Diamox. Don't know what your chances are in Xi'an. Maybe in a high-altitude place like Zhongdian or Lhasa you'd have better luck?

In Chinese, ask for hong2 jing3 tian1 and see if that helps.
Cheers!

That blue line above the table is "Chinese" name. /It's an OTC drug[250 mg ~Y13/bottle=100 tab ]
If you can't find it, just go to the bigger hospital that had an eye dept & ask the Dr to prescribe it. [diamox is usually used to treat Glaucoma]

#2 is right, hong2 jing3 tian1 is helpful. It's a tradional Chinese medicine for altitude sickness, but you should take it 10-15 days in advance.
