Just after some quick ideas. I'm planning to do the East Coast this weekend with a friend (last minute planned trip). However, as the title implies, we are don't have valid licenses for car/motorbike/scooter travel in Taiwan, and we aren't too keen on riding between towns/cities (especially with the forecasted rain).
Besides Taroko (obviously), could anyone suggest possible locations that are accessible by train from Hualian or Taidong that can be done as day trips? Or anywhere…

I'm a Portuguese citizen, traveling now in Philippines, and within a few days I'm going to Taiwan from Clark to Taipei from AirAsia.
I have travel almost all countries in SE Asia, China and South Korea, and the only ones I was required to have a return ticket was Indonesia, Philippines and South Korea.
As usual I don't known how long I want to stay in Taiwan (as Portuguese I can have 90-days on arrival). And my next intended destination is China.
I met people that were able to travel to Taiwan…
Happened so far in every place where we have stayed. All nights spent in the hotel must be fully paid at the moment you check in. If you pay by credit card they will add 5%.
I wonder why this is the case. Are they afraid the customers might leave without paying or might not be able to afford the room?
In Europe such advance payment is unthinkable. You usually pay when you check out.

I'm planning a short trip to Taiwan in May (arriving Fri afternoon, departing following Thu evening).
Weekend will be at Taipei leisure shoppings, night markets and foods :) I'm thinking of flying out on Mon early morning to Penghu and stay for 2 nights then fly back to Taipei on Wed evening. Anyone has experience visiting Penghu recently? How's the weather? There is the fireworks festival going on from April to May.

What are the 'normal' rates for filling, tooth extraction, .. etc.?
I'll be spending a few days in Taipei in the coming weeks. Does any one know of any temple where travellers can stay over-night? (I couldn't find anything online.)
Alternatively, is there any sort of "traditional accomodation" option (like one would have ryokan+ in Japan or +hutong in China, e.g.)?

What are other place to visit in alishan aside from alishan recreational center?
when i reach alishan by the bus from chiayi, what is my medium of transportation to go around the area? like how do i go to alishan recreation center? do they have a bus, taxi?
Do i need to pre book the bus ticket from chiayi to alishan? Am i assured of a seat?

I have been using them twice , so far, so I could visit places which usually were OUT of reach. Some routes have day passes, like in Taroko coming from Hualien
