The LP writes that we can get to Shitoushan by taking a bus (Hsinchu Bus Company) near the Hsinchu Train Station.
Are there other ways to get there?

Can we get to Shitoushan by bus from Sanyi (=San Yi) or from Miaoli ?

We are planning to visit Changhua (Great Buddha + Confucius Temple) in the morning, the woodcarving shops/museum in San-Yi in the afternoon and then travel on to Shitoushan?
Is that possible in 1 day?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know whether it is possible to travel from Hong Kong to Taiwan (and back again) by boat. Apparently it is possible; supposedly Star Cruises takes this route, but so far I've had no information from them. I understand this is not a conventional way to Taiwan; however, I am keen to see if it is possible - I hate flying! I am in Hong Kong now.

Can anyone recommend a cheap hostel in Alishan with a double room which offers online booking? If online booking is not available, is it easy enough to find a room there in December? Do you recommend going there in December in the first place?

The Lonely Planet information on crossing the south part of Taiwan, next November, is a little bit confusing:
We prefer to take the South Cross-Island Highway by public bus: There is a bus going from Tainan to Meishankou. The bus to Haitung starts from Tienchih. How to overcome the 27 kms between Meishankou and Tienchih? A taxi? What is a reasonable price for that (in US dollars)? Is this also possible in November (winter season)?

After much time spent on the dusty flats of Xinjiang, I'm again pining for some local cuisine, but so far I've failed to fine any authentic offerings in Taiwan.
