Now that it has been over 1 month since the typhoon what came people tell me about damage. I had heard that the Yushan tourist towns had been devastated and that the railroad up the mountain closed.

Is it still possible to get transportation to that area and do the hike into the mountains?

Thanks for your input,

Barking Deer has written a good summary of the situation with road and trail closures. Another blog called Lief in Taiwan has good information about the situation in Namasiya.

The road to Alishan may be accessible to smaller buses within a couple of months. Don't expect the railway to be in operation until some time next year. There is talk that the operation of the railway may be changed in some way. I am not sure of the exact details.

If you are traveling anywhere in the south, you should check blogs and other government websites, because a lot of places were hit. Alishan? Forget it, I think it will take them a year to fix it. A lot of the roads are out, bridges out so you cannot easily get in. Some railways have also been severely damaged, but they are doing what they can to repair everything as quickly as possible.

Some hikes are still possible, but it depends on where you want to go.

This might considered lazy. I am going to Taiwan on October 7 and I am new to the geography of Taiwan. Is there any map with the areas affected from the typhoon marked out? I see a lot of names of places but it is really hard for me to know them all at this stage.
