Brown Sugar and Barcode are not just south of Taipei Train Station. They're in Xinyi. They're actually quite far from Taipei Main!

Anyway that area is really not a bar area. When there I usually end up drinking martinis at the Hotel Caesar Park, like a downmarket James Bond. There are a few bars in the Japanese 100 kuai seafood area just north of Shandao Temple (around Chang'an/Linsen) but I've never been in. That's actually north of Taipei Main but it's likely about as close as you're going to get.

Just to the west, you can go to Ximen and behind Red House Theater (exit 1), there is a whole section of very fun, very cheerful, very gay bars that I think are just great.
