Maybe a bit of a dumb question: Am visiting Taiwain at end of month. As weather will be warmer, what is the cultural expectation for men re shorts or long trousers? Being Aussie, we mostly wear shorts throughout summer, but am aware that some cultures are different. Thanks.

Arriving on shorts, and if you feel uncomfortable, you can buy long trousers in Taiwan.

Or you can check clothes in Taiwan on some YouTube.

Thanks so much. Great info. Obviously, long trousers is the most common.

Plus, gives good mosquito protection/

hi Harry
dont worry. it is not dumb ~
i suggest you wear shorts because now it is very hot in Taiwan.
but if you will visit some mountains or anywhere like countryside , long trousers are also needed because of many mosquitoes.

welcome to Taiwan.

A lot of men here wear shorts. Especially college age people and foreigners who live here. There's nothing odd about wearing knee length shorts, though I wouldn't recommend going any shorter :)

By the way, when I went to Green Island ( in Taiwan ,maybe from End of April to the beginning of May),I got quick and bad sunburn, especially around my face and neck, sored( and stains remained). So I had to roll a towel on my neck during the rest of the stay, thought I should have had some sun block cream(,which I couldn't buy there because of language problems and away from stores (perhaps)).

I think there are some ways of sun protection. For example, wearing a thin long sleeve shirts or long trousers is an idea.Or wearing sunblock cream.
Same as mosquitoes.

And damp might have to be taken in consideration. Then wearing short sleeve and shorts might be better.

So you have many things to avoid...(heat,chill(by air-conditioner) mosquitoes, sunshine, rain, humidity, scratch, etc..)

But after all, you can buy most things in Taiwan,as long as you can manage to communicate with locals, and you are close to the store...

On the other hand,at business areas, men office workers usually wear suits or long trousers.I think that affects men's clothes (and women's).

It’s okay to use either long trousers or shorts. I don’t think that would be an issue.

Well, I'm back home now, so a report re shorts. Only took long trousers. Japan was starting to warm up. Whilst most men were wearing longs, a few were in shorts - including tourists and generally didn't look too bad.

Taiwan was much hotter and quite a few more local men were wearing shorts - mainly younger guys, but some older guys too. Ended up at Kenting in the south where it was very hot and a beach side holiday area. Most of the younger Taiwanese guys were in shorts plus some of the older guys plus overseas tourists. So hot that I relented and bought shorts there and wore them most of the time remaining including back in Taipei then for most of the six days I was in Hong Kong.

Didn't really feel self-conscious as there were enough local guys around wearing shorts - although still far less than I see back home (in Australia) in summer. Still hard to understand why businessmen in Taipei and Hong Kong were almost all wearing ties and many with suit coats as well - despite temperatures being 30+ and about 90-95% humidity. Don't see that in Singapore or northern Australia in similar climatic conditions.

Thanks for all the tips. Had a great time and recommend all the places I visited..
