Boith rough guide and lonely planet also have some useful information on hiking, including national park websites and phone numbers.

Taipei Day Hikes could be a good resource.

#1 mentioned the Taipei Metro's hiking guide. It is actually very hard to find, but a friend converted it to a pdf file. The link is below.

Definitely get the Rough Guide (rather than LP) if you really like hiking!
It has much more info on routes and regulations, and is particularly good for sound advice on where and how to obtain the permits required to climb higher mountains like Yushan or Syueshan (Snow Mtn).
