I am looking for inexpensive places to drink in Taipei, whether they're dive bars, happy hour specials, trendy locals spots, whatever. I'm up for anything in terms of style and location. Thanks!

Back when I lived in Taipei
"Twin cities street" or "shuang chung jie," was the main hang out for well-employed ex-pats.

The general area of the normal University (Shi Da) and the Mandarin Daily news (Guo Yu Ri Bao) was the divey student hang out.
"Lin Sen north road," which bordered on the first place I mentioned, was the kind of area wise people would typically avoid.

"Ding Hao," more or less in the center of Taipei, was the classy place to hang out.

That was a while ago, but that's the way it was.

Great, thanks! I know NTU & The University Area are still popping, but I'll check the other areas out. Anyone know any specific cool places?

Check out a cafe (not really a bar but it serves alcohol) on Shi Da Rd. called "Grandma Nitti's."

The owner's name is Rainbow.

she always wanted to run a beachside cafe and she models the place a little bit like one.
To her mixed satisfaction, it became the popular place to go after bar, at 2 am for western breakfast.

I don't know if the place is still open, but Rainbow is a top-shelf person and anyone who has met her wishes here well.
