Hi all,

I am planning to travel with a female friend to Taiwan for about 7-8days. This will be our first visit there and I was hoping to look for inexpensive accommodation since we are both students. Hence I was wondering if there any good recommendations as to where two females can stay that are clean and safe?
For Taipei, I came across Taipei Green Hostel which looks decent so would just like to confirm it with someone who has stayed there before on its conditions.

In addition, I'm also looking for advice on places to visit, and if Tainan is a good place to add into our itinerary. We are worried whether traveling around Taiwan can be expensive and if so, we will probably limit ourselves from visiting places that are "overrated".

Thanks in advance for all your help. Very much appreciated.
Joanne.

Sorry, I can't help with hostel advice for anywhere in Taiwan.

I liked Tainan. If you enjoy old temples and old buildings then you will find it worthwhile to go there. http://www.wikitravel.com can have some good suggestions on what to do in various cities in Taiwan. One city you probably should not go to on a short trip like yours is Kaohsiung. It's not a terrible place and it would actually be a decent place to live, but it has very little of interest for tourists. On a 7-8 day trip you'd do well to skip it and go somewhere else.

Travel in Taiwan is not necessarily expensive, but you pay for speed. The HSR (High Speed Rail) is very fast and very nice, but it can be expensive. There are cheaper trains that are not quite as nice as the HSR trains (but those cheaper trains aren't terrible either), but they are much slower. A trip on them may take 2 or 3 times as long as on HSR. Note that you should only pay cash for any HSR travel. They supposedly take credit cards, but they actually charge the ticket as a cash advance against your credit card, which means that you accumulate interest on the charge from the day it's made and continue to accumulate interest until you pay off the entire balance on the card.

Taiwanese people are very friendly and helpful. Everyone doesn't speak English, but it's not difficult to find people who do speak it and those who do speak English generally speak it well. Two females will not encounter any problems to travel there.
