I'm flying into Taipei next week on the 21st. I saw in one of the other threads that part of the southern railway somewhere between Kaohsiung and Taitung was damaged. I had planned to take the train from Tainan to Taitung, so can anyone fill me in on the extent of the damage (i.e. Is it out of commission for a couple of days or significantly longer?)
Also any word on Lanyu (Orchid Island)? I've got tickets reserved to fly there for a few days, so I'm wondering if it was affected, and if so, how extensive was the damage?
And because of the problems with that train line, I'm considered going to Taroko instead of Tainan. What's the best way to get to Hualien from the international airport? I'm arriving around 2pm and would prefer to get to Hualien the same day if possible. I'm assuming taking a bus to Taoyuan station and then getting an express train, but maybe there's a better way.

Thanks a lot for your help,
Jason

The TRA website says the Kaohsiung-Taidong line is still closed. No idea when it will reopen but it could take weeks.

If you land at Taoyuan International Airport and want to go to Hualien the fastest way would be to take a bus to Taipei Station and then take the next train from there. If you went to Taoyuan you would probably have to change trains at Taipei anyway.

A quick search on Twitter showed that boats to Orchid Island are running again, but the island suffered some serious damage. Sorry I can't glean much more information than that.
