I am an exchange student in Seoul for the semester and a friend and I recently decided we had way to much free time on our hands. We have been trying to find some volunteer opportunities in Seoul that would be willing to take help from short term foreign students. We are attending school at Sogang University and if there was something near that would be ideal. Does anyone know of anything promising?

Your University should have some kind of volunteer network already, as many Korean students will take time to do things outside of their studies.

I know of two places in Gyeonggi-do that take foreign volunteers, but they're a long way from Seoul. I remember reading about an orphanage somewhere, but can't remember any details. There may be a thread on forums.eslcafe.com/korea about it.

If you can't find anywhere, take charge! Mt. Nogosan is just behind Sogang, so take an afternoon off and go pick up all the litter. Put posts out calling for extra helpers if you like - Sinchon definitely needs some cleaning up.

Keep in mind that volunteer work is probably forbidden by your visa type, so stay away from the immigration office area. ;)

people would actually not let you help? that is so strange...i never even thought that they would not let you volunteer on certain visas

I did around 2 months volunteering in Korea, and never found anyone who thought that it was a bad idea, or that there was any chance of getting into trouble.

Technically it's illegal as the visa conditions are very explicit, but there's virtually zero chance of anything coming of it.
