I will be in Seoul next week for 5 days (assisting my sister to pick up a son she is adopting!). We will have a few days to explore, but probably won't be leaving Seoul. I would love to see some of the real culture of Seoul and get immersed in the local culture, rather than spend my time 'shopping'.
I would love any recommendations on any temples or palaces in Seoul that are worth seeing, or any 'must-see' points of interest. Also, any areas where local cuisines abounds that I should check out? (I am vegan by the way, but I figure I can make due in Korea...kimchee, etc)

Very little Korean food is vegan. Most kimchi contains seafood either in the form of fermented shrimp, oysters or fish sauce. Mul kimchi (vegetables in brine) is an exception, but it's not served in many places (don't rely on it). One cannot live on kimchi and rice alone. Most soups contain some shellfish or pork (or other meat).

Vegan foods I can think of:

Pajeon (green onion pancake). It can be a bit greasy, though it is good.

Bibimbap without meat or egg. Kinda boring, but it'll do.

Steamed vegetable side dishes.

Not much else

Korea is infamously difficult for vegetarians nevermind vegans. Most vegans that live here make most of their own food. There are a small handful if restaurants that serve vegan food. One chain is called Loving Hut.

Ok thanks so much! I really appreciate the warning about the kimchi. Looks like I will have to pack a lot of snacks.

I forgot to mention that Korean Buddhist monks are vegans. There's a restaurant in Insadong specializing in this called Sanchon. I had a decent meal there. There are probably a few other restaurants scattered around.

My favourite palace was Chanyeonggung, for the beautiful gardens. The palace next door, Changdeokgung, has interesting buildings too. If you like history, the National Folk Museum gives a pretty good overview of Korean history and lifestyle. You should also take a walk around the Bukchon area and Samcheong-dong - the former is full of traditional buildings and the latter with interesting restaurants and shops.

You could do some hiking along Seoul's city walls, check this out:

If you like contemporary art, there are a few art galleries around Bukchon/Insadong...
Bukchon is also very nice to walk around :)

Thanks for the suggestions!
The temple looks beautiful. Can guests just stop by at any time, or are appointments or tours needed?

Any indie music suggestions would be great, as well as vegan dining in Seoul.
