Hi

I recently graduated from university and want to teach English in Korea. I'd like to do a TEFL certification course in Asia and then find a job in Korea shortly after its completion. Can anyone tell me what month is the best for finding a job? For instance, should I wait until the next semester in 2011 or would I be able to find work if I did my certification in either October or November, which is what I would like to do but am unsure if there would be jobs open. Also, if anyone has a recommendation on a TEFL certification course to take that would be much appreciated.

Thank You

Instead of asking this question on a travel forum, try a forum that specializes in EFL. Try Dave's http://eslcafe.com/, http://tefldaddy.com/, http://www.tefl.net/forums/, http://www.esl-jobs-forum.com/ & http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-chalkboard/.

www.teacheslkorea.com/ is specific for Korea.

If you want to work at a public school or university, certain times of the year are better than others for spotting job announcements and, therefore, applying for jobs. Such Korean institutions begin their school year in March, and may begin advertising as early as November/December, though, to reiterate, the positions would not begin until March. Then there are the mid-year positions which usually start in late August or early September (and are therefore usually advertised during the early summer).

Private academies, however, called "hagwons", advertise and hire year round, and there are many of them. You can find the current crop of job announcements on Dave's ESL Cafe.

You will need to plan in advance to get a criminal background check, university transcripts/diploma, etc (which may take from a few weeks to several months). The university data is usually needed to apply for a job, and the background check to secure one. Make contact with your area Korean consulate (internet page?) to ascertain the details.

You need to think about what age level--from kindergarten through to adult--you are most interested in and/or qualified to teach. Public schools will usually give you one age/grade grouping, while private schools will expect you to teach multiple age levels.

I am sure others can add more to this basic information . . .

Like what #3 says. Private academy (hagwon) jobs are available anytime, public school positions mainly in September and March.

A TEFL qualification will get you an extra 100,000 Won a month pay. The pay increase seems to be the same whether you do a cheap online TEFL course or an expensive fully fledged residential course with classroom practice.

Having a cert might give you a better chance of securing a better job. However, having said that, I don't have a TEFL certification and I found a good job here without any trouble, I suspect the Koreans value looks, accent and telephone interview manner over and above any TEFL certification. I looked into getting a TEFL cert of some kind before I came to Korea and decided against it in the end. The CELTA course generally seems to be the most respected and is probably a lot more useful in other countries than in Korea.

Be flexible when job hunting, as there perhaps aren't the number of quality jobs around as there used to be. Make sure you talk to current or previous foreign teachers at the institution before you sign any contracts!

Good luck!
