Lonely Planet tells me it is best to avoid Korea in July or August if possible. Those are the months when I have an opportunity to go! Is it really that bad?

July and August are usually hot, like 31 degrees C, and often humid. In addition, most students have vacation during this time, so many family trips are arranged. Travel is especially bad during late July and early August.

Korean Thanksgiving this year is September 13-15. Do not try to travel during that time.

I would suggest mid-October to mid-November as the best time to travel in South Korea.

Just back from a six week tour of Korea, so i can tell you first hand, yes its hot and humid, normally over 30 degrees and the humidity is always very high. If you are not used to thoes sorts of temperatures you will find it very uncomfortable, I live in northern australia and had very little trouble with the heat.
The crowds weren't too bad either, nothing like the squeez you get in the european summer or in more popular asian destinations like thailand.

I am sitting here, in Korea, waiting for the ferry back to China and I have to say that it was not bad at all for the last few weeks of August. The weather is a little hot but it is nice and Korea has a lot of beaches and trees to help you keep cool. Travel was not difficult at all, I didn't purchase one train or bus ticket in advance and always got a seat. Motels and hotels will try to go up a little in price especially on the weekends but you will find many that don't seem to have any guests and you will be able to bring the price down. I didn't pay full price for any of the places that I stayed in.

Thank you for the replies. I have travelled in Thailand and Vietnam so I am somewhat accustomed to heat. 31 dosen't seem too bad to me!

Most importantly you can bargain your hotel prices down. At the beginning of August the Lotte Hotel quoted me a room for $360 a night, i pushed them for a discount and i stayed there for $120. Everywhere i went i got to stay for 30%-50% less than the asking price
ciao.

It does rain a lot too, often heavily for long periods of time.

Try October. I went to Seoul a couple of years ago in October. The weather is nice and the trees are all golden yellow. Absolutely marvelous.
