Just a quick pre-departure question that will hopefully get some pre-departure answers.

Does anyone here have any first-hand experience (positive or negative) with renting cell phones at Incheon Airport, particularly from a company called S Roaming (formerly Skype Roaming)? If so, I'd like to hear what you have to say about it.

Thanks!

Hi! I rented a cell phone at Incheon Airport, and it's working quite well. Maybe a bit expensive, but oh well. Although, the only time we tried to send something to Sweden (my home country) the sms was never delivered... Good luck with the phone renting! Best regards, Emma

Thanks for that. Sending text messages outside Korea is one thing I'd like to be able to do, so it's good that you mentioned this (sorry to hear it doesn't work though...).

Anybody else?

I rented a phone at Incheon Airport.....took the option of renting a phone that I could put my own (GSM) SIM card into, and so use my own phone number. Price was quite okay. The staff at SK telecom couldn't get my card to work with their phone, so I went over to KT, where the phone worked fine with the card. Unfortunately, the phone had a weak battery, and it would only work for 4-5 hours on a full charge.

Never tried S Roaming.

By way of answering my own query: rented an LG handset from Skype Roaming at the airport about a week ago. So far so good, texting outside Korea has been pretty hit and miss, but inside the country both text and voice work fine. Only problem is it's quite expensive, though less so with this company than their competitors, especially if you register and pre-order through the KTO website (all prices and rates are listed there). And anyway this seems to be about the only solution unless you want to scrounge around for a used phone and then try getting prepaid service set up...

hi - i just returned from a great trip to south korea; fractured my wrist 2 days before return to states, so will be pithy with my one-handed typing. rented at the airport upon arrival from an efficient and helpful company. i tried renting a cell phone from a company called IN TOUCH USA (there's also an IN TOUCH GLOBAL.) before leaving USA so that i'd have a way to communicate as soon as i arrived. DARREN MOORE, manager of business development, got a raher bulky phone to me, but the instructions were not at all clear. after calling for help and getting no return call, i ended up renting a phone at INCHEON AIRPORT from S'ROAMING. despite language barrier, the staff was able to understand what i needed and explain to me exactly how to use the phone for calls/texts within/out korea. the one call i had to make to customer service was handled well, even with language problem. upon my return to states, and now speaking the same language as DARREN, i was unable to get a refund for the phone i never used, and was lambasted for not understanding the instructions by the same mr. moore who was quite nice and polite when selling me the phone. needless to say (i guess this isn't as brief as i expected it to be!) i STRONGLY suggest renting your cell phone IN south korea and never using IN TOUCH GLOBAL/USA. have fun in this interesting country; i plan on returning.
