I spent five weeks in South Korea three months ago and never had any trouble using my Australian ANZ Bank card (Cirrus) at Citibank ATMs here, though no other ATMs would work. Now I'm back and the Citibank ATMs all spit the very same card out with a very unhelpful "Other Error" message. I've tried Global ATMs in two other banks in Hongdae which also reject my card.

Does anybody know if there have been changes in the South Korean ATM network in the past three months regarding foreign cards, Cirrus cards, Australian cards, or ANZ cards? Or should I expect it to magically work come business opening time on Monday?

Are you sure that 1) the magnetic strip (or chip) on your card isn't damaged? 2) that your own bank hasn't put a block on it--either because you didn't notify them you 'd be using it (again) in S. Korea, or because your bank has somehow changed it's anti-fraud procedures? If the card doesn't work now, it probably won't work on Monday, but at least then you can find a human to ask questions of.

The card is not blocked and I've used it in over a dozen countries during the past five months.

I finally found one standalone ATM (not in a bank) in Hongdae that worked with my card but had an extra 3000 Won fee.

I was told that another Australian traveller found the machine recently when he had the same problem as me. This makes me think it's not a problem with the magnetic scrpt on my card but something more systematic.

I'm another Aussie traveller who just got back from Korea.
In Jongno I had problems at Woori bank, it just would not work even though it did work last year at the same bank.
Tried 3 times and even had the bank reset the machine for me.
Went across the road to a KBstar bank and it worked fine.

I know this thread was 2 years ago, but we are now experiencing the same problem. We have been in Korea for the past few years with no problems mainly using KEB Global ATM for Visa Debit withdrawals. Suddenly last week our cards stopped working at both Citibank and KEB. Between my husband and myself we have 4 visa cards and none now work. We have contacted our bank, who have checked with Visa and the card manufacturer plus within their own banking system and there are no blocks or any issues. We are able to use our cards to pay for purchases, but just not withdraw any money. The ATM response is "other error" then "contact your bank". I have asked KEB and they advised that our bank has blocked it which is not correct.

Can anyone shed some light on this

Thanks

Try the stand alone type machines that arent linked to a bank, you can often find them in convenience stores and bus stations. They are often known to work when other places won't.
