I'm heading to Gyeongju for Friday-Monday of Chusseok and am worried about finding accomodation b/c of the holiday. Traveling as a couple and looking for a cheap place to stay, but still want our own room.
Has anyone stayed in a good place in Gyeongju that meets these 2 basic requirements?
Help is greatly appreciated!
Sarangchae is amazing. It's listed in the LP guide book. However, it tends to fill early on. Otherwise, if you hit the main street that runs between the train station and the bus station there are several yeogwan (여관, I believe; look for the signs). We ended up staying in one right next to a dog store and a massive 빵 place; if you're there in the evening there will probably be a line out the door for it. Rooms at both places were 40,000/night, clean, and private.
Forgot to add: be forewarned if you go with Sarangchae that the map in LP is wrong. If you follow the street that curves back behind the Tumuli Park, it'll take you to a cluster of houses in what looks like a traditional neighborhood. You should see signs for Sarangchae. Locals seem to know where it is, too, so ask for help.
Called the owner of Sarangchae just last night to make a booking, and he says the place is closed for Chuseok weekend. Let me know if you hear otherwise ;)
i was in gyeongju last night with 8 other people; we stayed in a HI hostel near (and when i say near, i mean literally a 5 minute walk) bulguksa temple. while this isn't in the city centre, we did experience some trouble trying to find accommodations because of school groups, so i can't imagine what chuseok will be like. be warned, however, that most of the HI hostel rooms boasted nothing but traditional floor sleeping mats and blankets. make sure you specify whether you want a bed or not. hope this helps.
