I'm getting the trans-mongolian train from Moscow-Beijing next Tuesday (6th).
I have got visas for Russia and China, but the company I got these through (http://realrussia.co.uk) didn't seem to do Mongolian transit visas (only full ones which were more expensive).
Therefore I need a Mongolian visa, and there isn't much time to get it. I've seen conflicting reports on whether it's feasible to get one in Moscow or not. I'm going straight through on the train and not stopping off anywhere so…

I had planned originally on starting the Tran sib to Russia in Beijing but from what ive been reading it is now next to impossible to get tickets in Beijing (Is this correct ?)
So, assuming i manage to get a visa for China, how would one go about getting from China into Mongolia , then once in UB is it business as normal all the way to Moscow ?

Does anyone know if it's possible cross from Erenhot in Inner Mongolia into Outer without being on the train? I mean, is there a non-train border crossing from there and is it open to foreigners and is it possible to hitch/bus from there on to UB? Has anyone done this? I have no idea what the land situation in Mongolia is so you'll have to tell me.

Any advice on where to stay in UB? Anything other than dorm rooms? Just read on another site that the Khongor is definitely not recommended. Trouble is getting email addresses for the ones that are. Are there absolutely, as it would appear, no decent affordable hotels?
Seems a bit difficult to get replies to my requests from the places I'd like to stay. Golden gobi seem to be so popular they don't have bother. I can't seem to find an email address for the Khongor GH. only for their travel agency it seems. Those two were the best from my experience last year and I'd sure like to avoid the runaround of not being booked in advance this year even though I'm going in early June which should be a bit less of a zoo. I will be travelling from Beijing to U.B. in 4 weeks time and I am having a few problems trying to find out exact details of the direct trains. I have spent time looking at different threads on here and on various sites (man in seat 61) and contacted CITS and Ocean Travel , but I am still not 100% sure about what is happening with train times and booking arrangements. I have decided that if I have to I will travel to the border at Erlian and cross there before catching a train to U.B.

Can anyone tell me how to go about overstaying a 30 day tourist visa in Mongolia. Is it possible to just overstay and pay a fine on departure? Or do you have to extend it officially in UB? I'm only talking about staying 4 or 5 days over the 30 days usually granted. Any advice appreciated. Thanks LP
