Can anyone tell me the connection between Genghis Khan's town , Karakoram, and the highway/area in Pakistan.
Did he name them both?? (though obviously just a track at the time).

Hi people.
I'm going in august (2010) to Mongolia. Also, I want to go to Karakoram Highway from Kashgar to Pakistan. For that, first I know I need to go HohHot and later, Urumqui. Anybody knows if there is a bus or train service between Ulaanbaatar and HohHot?

Thanks!

G'Day peoples,
I will be visiting Mongolia for a short 2 weeks next March and am after some answers that I cannot really find anywhere.

I was mostly wondering about what role the cold winter plays on transport between towns and what sort of winter is it?

From all the tables, it would seem it is a very dry cold winter?

Is there often much snow and ice that effects international and domestic flights, the in between town buses or the trains?

I have read all the other winter threads on this…

Dear all,

I´m planning a trip to Beijing via Mongolia by Trans-Siberian railway in August 2010. I´ve made some research and according to that train tickets from Ulaanbaatar to Beijing are usually difficult to get in the peak season - and that´s when I´m going to be there. LP suggests to book a ticket by phone through ticket office in UB and booking fee is 4500 tögrög. Has anybody used this option and how this booking fee should be paid in this case? Is it really impossible to get a train ticket…

Hi,
I am a slightly uneducated 19 year old traveller currently in Ulaan Baatar. I am trekking and hitching to Beijing. My Mongolian visa expires on the 2nd of December. I plan to arrive in China around the 30th of November. When I leave Mongolia my Mongolian visa expires. I plan to spend 2 weeks in China. I then want to go back to Ulaan Baatar stay for 3 weeks and then fly back to London.
Anyway, is there a cooling off period where I have to spend a certain amount of time out of Mongolia before I…

Hi,

The first case of the Swine Flu pandemic in Mongolia was confirmed on October 12th.
Today, a month later, on November 12th there are over 700 confirmed cases in the capital city Ulaanbaater and over 200 cases across the country provinces.

The Mongolian government is taking severe precautions to prevent further spread of the flu.

President Tsakhia Elbegdorj said: "We must recognize that the situation has reached the level of disaster. I am concerned about the rate of spread of the disease,

I understand travelling around is difficult - and horse treks and too much walking won't be an option. Are there enough public transport options to see some of country. Not sure that we are going to have budget to hire a jeep for whole thing, but maybe short trips if needed. How bad is food. Do people who have…

Gday Peoples,

On the 3rd of November, im flying out from London to Moscow, catching the train to Ulan Ude, bussing it to Ulan Bartar, obtaining my chinese visa there, then setting off by foot to beijing, crossing the Zamyn Ude/China border. I am doing it with a mate, and i think the journey will be something like 1300km, neither of us have ever really done anything like this before, so it'll certainly be interesting. From Beijing ill fly to Tokyo, then back to Sydney (home).

Given that it will…
