I'm considering driving a personal car from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar using the border crossing at Erlian. The car is registered in Beijing and I have a Chinese driver's license. I assume this is possible, but wonder if there are any special documents, advance permission, or fees that I should be aware of, either to bring the vehicle into Mongolia or to return to China. Can I legally drive in Mongolia using a Chinese or United States driver's license? Thanks.

Mongolia

Hi,

I will be in Mongolia for a few days in a couple weeks, and will have 1 full day spare in Ulaan Batar to do something. I was thinking of taking a tour arranged by the guesthouse Im staying at. Does anyone have any recommendations of what to choose? My preference would be something related to culture/history/nature in that order or preference or combination.

Thanks,

Jason.

Hello All --

I am living in China and must cross a border every 60 days to satisfy my Visa reqs and I've always been fascianated by Mongolia, BUT I always imagined going there in the summer. Now that I have the chance to go, its gonna be freezing cold --- any suggestions of where to go or what to do with maybe 3 days to spend? I could either fly from Beijing to Ulan B, or just take the train to Hohot and cross there to get the Visa stamped...but that sounds kinda lame..

Thanks for any…

Hi, I have a flight booked for Sunday the 27th 2009 from Ulaanbaatar to London. I am in Beijing now, just put in Mongolian visa application (express) which I can pick up tomorrow, 22nd December at 16:00. (invitation didn't seem to be essential by the way).

I have two options

1- Get the international train on wed morning and feel comfortable I will get back to UB in time for my flight, but cough up 1128 yuan.
2- Get the wed the 23rd Chinese domestic train which departs Beijing at 07:45 and arrives…

Does anybody know?
When are Mongolian nomad kids allowed to learn riding horses?

I found different sources about this, one claiming they are only allowed to start training
AFTER the haircutting ceremony, while others seem to think they start pretty much right away.

Any information would be appreciated...
Cheers

Hi!

My next holidays will be end of April. According to the LP overview the travel season starts mid-May.
1) Would you consider it insensate to go there mid-April to the beginning of May? Would the weather and travel conditions be far worse then?

2) Another thing - as I understand travelling might include a lot of hitchhiking, would three weeks be "enough" (I know time for travelling is never enough...) to enjoy this huge country?

Thanks for your advice!
Gaston

Hi,

I'm hoping to take the trans-mongolian at the end of january 2010. Not yet sure of the exact date i will enter mongolia but will probably be booking my accom in the UB guesthouse in the next few days.
I understand its not exactly t-shirt and shorts weather at that time of year so it may sound stupid but will there be many other back-packers there at the same time does anyone know??
Im a UK citizen, registering my russian visa in st. petersburg, is it possible for me to get my mongolian visa…

My husband and I, both Canadian, plan to take the trans-Mongolian railway starting in Beijing and ending in Moscow. We have a couple questions:

1) Would you recommend we bought the train ticket before applying for the Mongolian visa or the other way around?
2) Will the train ticket be 'invitation' enough to get our visa? We haven't decided if we will actually get off the train in Mongolia yet, so we may not have a hotel reservation when we are applying.

THANKS

Well, after staying for awhile in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia I'm on the road again. But I wanted to help out to my landlord with finding a tenant. An apartment I live in UB is right in downtown, 2 bedrooms, big living room, very nice place. It's walking distance to the main places in UB. So anyone interested please drop me an email.
