Yes, May is a good time to enjoy the flora of Mongolia.
Diverse Flora
Mongolia has a very diverse and distinctive flora, which represents a mixture of species from the northern taiga of Siberia, down to the steppe and deserts of Central Asia. Many of them are unique to Mongolia over 150 species of endemic plants (species found in Mongolia but nowhere else in the World).
The flora of Mongolia can be divided into 3 distinct types of ecosystem related to flora
Steppes vegetation cover about 50% of the country,
Desert vegetation cover about 30%
Forest vegetation almost 20%
There are 3,000 species of flowering plants registered in Mongolia. Almost 1,000 species are registered as medicinal plants which are used in traditional medicine, including 200 species which are used in modern medicine.
Steppes Flora
The steppes consists mainly of grassland and shrubs and blossom in May in red, yellow and purple wild flowers, mainly rhododendrons and edelweiss, and also gentians, geraniums, eyelets, delphiniums, peas, ancolies, asters and others transforming Mongolia into a colorful garden.
Forest Flora
The forests consists mainly of Siberian larch (sometimes up to 45m high) pines and birches, and over 100 other species.
Desert Flora
The desert and semi-desert consists of saxaul shrub, May is when colorful flowers blossom.
Where to find
Go to the national parks where grazing is limited, around white lake, and the hills around Khuvsgul.
In the desert move away from the main dirt roads and wonder along the dry river beds for the May blossoms.
In the steppes get away from the grazing fields, and walk along the rivers.
Near UB, climb up the Bogd Khan mountain, or climb the hills in Terelj national park.
Story
See my story on the Gobi Cynomorium which blossoms for a short time in May, and is used for traditional medicine and as food for the Gobi Nomads.
Send some photos when you return
Have a colorful trip
