I will be in Bayan Olgii for July - August 2009. I plan to stay for 6 weeks, as I will be doing research for my dissertation on Kazakhs in Mongolia. After checking with the Mongolian consulate in Kazakhstan, where I will get my visa, they told me that they'll be happy to issue me 30 day visa with no problem, but I will have to get an extension while I am there.
Does anyone know whether it is possible to get visa extension from Olgii or will I have to go to Ulan Bator in person for it? Also, if I do have to go to UB for visa extension, how soon before my visa expires do I need to do it and how long does it usually take to get the extension? I'd greatly appreciate any advice on this.

It is my understanding that the only place to get an extension is in UB And that it must be applied for within the first 7 days of arrival in Mongolia not towards the end of your authorized visa stay.
