There are two different trains that cross from UB to Irkutsk. One is daily and the other is faster but only twice a week. Price depends upon class of travel in addition to which train.

There is also a daily bus from UB to Ulan Ude which is on the eastern side of the lake. Information on the bus price is probably in the New RU Sticky.

Might be worth checking out www.seat61.com for trains in Mongolia, timetables, prices and related websites!

There is no website for Mongolian train information. Even the man in seat 61 site doesn't have it. There is one travel agency that posts some information online with their prices: limited Mongolian Train schedule

We travelled Irkutsk (the stop for Lake Baikal, 1 hr from the lake) to Ulan Bataar 23rd Jan on train 362. There is only 2nd class on that train and the cost was 150 euros. We bought the ticket in advance from www.uraltourism.com. We were met at the Irkutsk station by a guy with the tickets when we got off the train from Moscow. If you would like a tour in Mongolia from 1 day to many weeks we really, really recommend Bolod http://www.bolodtours.com/.

The price of 150 Euros is much higher than the actual price of a ticket and includes the agency's service charges for pick up and delivery.
