Hi all, my friend and I are trying to get to Ulan-Ude from Ulan Baatar next week. We already know that the bus is cheaper and faster, but due to extenuating circumstances are hoping to go with the train. Now, a strange question:

Our Russian visas become valid on the 30th of August. Does anyone know about what time the Ulan Bator - Ulan Ude train crosses the Russian border? If we catch the train from UB on the 29th, will we reach the border later that night, and be denied entry into Russia because our visas still aren't valid? Or will we spend so much time waiting at the Mongolian border that by the time we're across, it will most likely be in the early hours of the 30th? Or is it way too sketchy to tell? ;)

Maybe it's a weird question but we're very appreciative of any help!! :)

What train (number) do you plan to take?

We'll probably take whichever is the daily train - #263 or 264? If there's also another train leaving on Wednesday (which the 29th is) we could try that too :)

According to the detailed schedule available in the web of Urtu, train 263 arrives to the border the next day to the day it departed from Ulan Bator. It could be a good idea to confirm it locally though.

Why take the train which takes ~24 hours and has a long stop at the border when you can take the bus which departs daily at 0700, takes about 12 hours and is cheaper?

It would appear that the daily train departs at 21:10 local time (which is Moscow +4) and arrives in Naushki, the Russian border town, the following morning at 11: 50 Moscow time which is 16:50 local time or 15:50 Mongolian time). This train arrives in UU at 18:47 Moscow time which is 23:47 local time.

With the bus you also get to sleep each night in a real bed and not on a train.

Hello , I was considering the same toute and took a look at LP transiberian express guide book. There I could see the distance between the cities is around 650km but the trip lasts around 16 hours(transmongolian railroad). Then they mentioned around 7 hours at the border. At the site of REALRUSSIA you can buy tickets for this train .
Good luck
