Hello everybody,

my question is a bit "different" from what is usually posted here, but why not try to link work and leisure.
I will be in UB on a business trip :-( from 4-7 June. Apart from maybe a morning and an evening free to look around UB, I have also ONE ENTIRE SATURDAY FREE :-)

It's my first time in Mongolia and honestly I have no clue. Therefore I will have to rely on good sugestions and also probably on a tour in order ot get most out of my time. I might also have a driver. So, here comes the question:

What can I do and see aroung UB in one day?

Help is very much appreciated. And believe me: usually I prefer to travel more relaxed!

Thank you!
Wara

Hi Wara

It depends on what you'd like to do!

If you want to see a bit of the countryside (which I would recommend), I recommend you take a day trip to the nearby countryside (not too far, otherwise you will just spend a lot of time in the car). Terelj is nice - pretty toursity, but easy to get to and from in a day. Or you can try a trip to a nomadic family somewhere a bit more off the track (eg Khongor Guesthouse can arrange a trip to their friends in Doloon Hudag).

I would keep your morning to visit the Gandan monastery and the black market, Naran Tuul (but I would arrange a guide here if poss, also transport would be handly as you d on't have much spare time) passing by Sukhbaatar Square on the way. Also worth mentioning are Bogd Khan palace and Soviet Monument on Zaisan Hill on the South side of the city where you'll get views across the city.

Time is very short for your tour as it is mainly business trip!
I did nearly a similar thing in Jan, 2007.
I landed in UB from Beijing about 2pm on the 1st day and left on the 3rd day abt 10am.
I spend the whole so call 3days in UB. In Jan there isn't much to see. But in June there could be lots to see and do.
As you have the advantage of longer day! as i think the sun doesn't set till 8pm or later!
Take advantage in the evening to visit monument that are accessible in the evening. I think there one call victory hill or something similar from there you can see the whole UB.
One of the post has a good suggestion abet terelj. From what i heard it is a short drive abt 2 hrs to there.
and there is a giant Monument of Genghis Khan in between UB and Terelj which you can visit.
by arriving in Terelj the day before you will have the whole next day to explore the National Park.
I have a ex-colleague who i know for abt 4years in London that just return to Mongolia. Will pass you his contact via private message.

I would go to Erdene Zuu and see the ruins there and stay the night.
On the way back I'd stop at Khustai Park to see the rare wild Mongolian horses.
On the 3rd day I'd visit either Terel or Manshir Khid.
